Fundraiser for Brookside Boys and Girls Club

Friends,
I hope this finds you all doing well.  I have a favor to ask each of you and I appreciate your time and help in advance.  As most of you know I have been the unit director at the Brookside Boys & Girls Club for the past twelve years.  We provide afterschool and summer programs for children, ages 6-18, living in Brookside and the surrounding communities of Graysville, Adamsville, Forestdale, Mt. Olive and Gardendale. Our goal is simple; keep children off the streets and provide them a safe haven where they can come for guidance, encouragement, consistency and love. Sadly, not all children receive the emotional support or basic necessities from home.

To illustrate this point let me share a quick story with you. One night while carrying the children who live in the Brookside Public Housing home, a ten year old girl suddenly announced, “Hey Todd, did you know that tomorrow was my birthday?” It was late and had been a long day, but I managed a half-hearted, “Happy Birthday.”  I proceeded to ask her what she was getting for her birthday and she quietly said, “Oh, I don’t know.”  Irritated with her response since most kids can rattle off a list of presents they’re getting, I said. “Well, what did you ask for?”  Again, she responded with, “Oh, I don’t know”.  Still irritated, I asked “Well, are you at least having a party or a cake. “  She responded by simply saying, “Maybe.”  I was confused and couldn’t understand why a ten year old girl did not want to talk about all the excitement that would happen on her birthday.  Minutes later it became clear to me when her older brother leaned over and quietly said to her, “You know mom is not going to get you anything, or do anything for your birthday.  You know that, … Right?”  As my heart sank, the little girl responded with a resigned whisper, “Yea,…I know.”

You see, there are many children who live in homes that don’t give them what they need or deserve.  If a parent can’t make a child feel special on their birthday then what else is missing in that child’s life?  It is up to organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs to throw these children a lifeline and offer them hope and guidance.

I would greatly appreciate any support you can give us. Please spread the word to your friends, family and co-workers and encourage them to support our children. If you know of any businesses that might make a donation please let me know. I am open to any suggestions or ideas you might have, I can be reached at 674-7324.

Again, I can’t thank you enough for your time and support of the Brookside Boys & Girls Club.

Thank you,

Todd Love
